Tarmac choose Telescopic Stacker over Tripper Conveyor for Ship Unloading Application with Top of the Range Telestack Telescopic Radial Conveyor
Tarmac Ltd., have recently purchased the 2000TPH radial telescopic stacker. The Galvanised TS 2042 is being used in a ship off-loading application to stockpile imported sand on the quayside at Tarmac’s Howdon site situated on the north bank of the river Tyne. From here the sand is distributed to various locations throughout the North East of England.
The sand, which is dredged from an area known as the Wash Bank in the North Sea, is unloaded from the ship into a radial reception hopper. It is then conveyed along a conveyor system where it is transferred into the TS 2042. The TS 2042 is utilised to stockpile on site the sand delivered from the self-discharging vessels. These vessels carry volumes ranging between 3000t and 8,500t of sand and unloading time typically takes between 4 - 6 hours. It is estimated that around 250,000 tonnes per year will be stockpiled at the site. Kevin Muir, Site Manager commented:
“The TS 2042 unit was required to be capable to handling up to 2,000 tonnes per hour of material as it is anticipated that larger ships will be employed in the future with turnaround time being critical due to the river being tidal. The TS 2042 has already exceeded these volumes during trials and continues to perform well above the parameters of the specification”
The conveyor, the largest in the telescopic range, was supplied to a high specification for the coastal operation and included: fully galvanised steelwork, chrome over stainless steel hydraulic lift rams and stainless steel casing for the electrics. Steel wire armoured and heavy duty neoprene flat form cables with watertight glands were used to supply the limit switches, sensors and class 1 efficiency motors. To fully protect engineers servicing the unit and to restrict access, Fortress ‘dual trap’ key access locks were supplied in combination with a mains safety contactor and relay system.
The machine is anchored to a fixed point at the tail king pin. Radial movement is achieved by a hydraulic hub on the two drive wheels which slew the machine left or right on the concrete runway, installed to ensure smooth movement.
The conveyor can create a radial stockpile from 26 metres, when fully retracted, to 42 metres when fully extended. Stockpile capacity through 270 ° is approximately 80,000 tonnes at a density of 1.6t per metre³. A height sensor automatically raises the conveyor when the top of the stockpile comes to within 1m of the head drum, this also has the option if required be operated on a manual basis. The conveyor can be raised to a maximum height of 13.5 metres to the head drum. Kevin Muir went on to say:
“The machine has performed well and given us a reliable ship off-loading process. Prior to purchasing the Telestack TS 2042 we used a large fixed tripper conveyor system, however due to the corrosive nature of the environment we operate in, the time had come to replace our existing equipment. The civils involved in the original tripper system were excessive and sterilised a large area of the site when compared to the TS 2042. With space on the quayside at a premium the Telestack option offered us an increased stockpile capacity, and a greater speed of material transfer”
